CLERMONT – The sight of a thick wad of cash in the hand of a Clermont internet cafe employee was apparently much too tempting to a patron standing at the counter on Wednesday.
The patron reportedly snatched $2,500 from the clerk at the Grand Business Center just after midnight, then made a dash out the door to a waiting car, bowling over an elderly woman as she made her escape.
Lake County sheriff’s deputies say Kierra Clemmons did manage to get away, but not before losing the money in a tussle with a security guard who chased her down in the parking lot.
Deputies spotted the car minutes later on U.S. Highway 27 and arrested Clemmons.
Witnesses said the clerk was transferring the cash to the internet cafe’s safe when Clemmons grabbed it and took off. The 76-year-old woman she knocked over as she burst out the door was treated for her injuries at South Lake Hospital.
Clemmons is no stranger to this kind of crime. She served six months in state prison for a variety of charges, including a snatching robbery in Hillsborough County. She has also been arrested multiple times in Lake County for drug possession, theft, carrying a concealed weapon, DUI (twice) and aggravated battery.
